The last Wednesday in April is International Guide Dog Day. Every year on this date it is customary to express gratitude to the irreplaceable helpers and loyal friends of blind and visually impaired people. The Moscow State Veterinary Service currently has 56 such pets registered. These are mainly Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.

“Not every animal is capable of performing this responsible service. Before becoming guides, pets undergo serious selection, training, and receive a certificate of suitability for this profession. The city pays special attention to the health of these valuable specialists: each of the registered guide dogs receives full free veterinary care in state veterinary clinics in Moscow. This includes annual medical examinations, vaccinations, any types of research and laboratory tests, all therapeutic and surgical procedures of any complexity. In addition, we accommodate four-legged helpers for free in the pet hotel if such a need arises,” said the chairman of the capital’s Veterinary Committee

Alexey Sautkin.

To receive benefits for such services, the owner must provide a guide dog passport, documents confirming disability, and write a corresponding application. After this, the pet will be registered and a health passport will be issued. Upon completion of the veterinary examination, he will be assigned a attending physician who will monitor the regularity of medical examinations and preventive vaccinations, and will also be able to advise on health and maintenance issues.

“Over the course of many years of working with guide dogs, our veterinary specialists have accumulated a wealth of experience in both the treatment and prevention of diseases in animals of this profession. Some assistants are prone to obesity, endocrine system diseases, and orthopedic problems. Regular diagnostics and examinations make it possible to monitor changes at an early stage, prevent the development of diseases, and as a result, four-legged friends stay healthy longer and remain in the profession, faithfully serving their owners,” added Alexey Sautkin.

Guide dogs receive free specialized services not only in 26 state veterinary clinics in Moscow, but also at home. Specialized vehicles of the state veterinary service, equipped with the necessary equipment for medical examination, therapeutic care and even simple surgical operations, go to them. You can book a departure at a convenient time by calling the contact center of the capital’s state veterinary service by phone: 7 495 612-04-25.

If necessary, doctors will deliver a guide dog to the clinic, and if the case is serious and requires hospitalization, the pet will receive free services at the 24-hour inpatient clinic of the Veshnyaki veterinary clinic on Stary Gai Street (10a).
