In July 2022, during a photo opportunity in Baku following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the local dictator, President İlham Əliyev, as a ‘reliable, trustworthy partner’ with whom she also wanted to conclude a bilateral agreement.
Given that 100 000 Christian Armenians were brutally displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh in the autumn of 2023 and in light of Azerbaijan’s renewed threats of war, can the Commission say whether the President still considers İlham Əliyev to be a ‘reliable, trustworthy partner’?
