Today, across Canada, we celebrate Dutch Heritage Day.

We take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the significant contribution – past and present – of Dutch Canadians to our social, cultural and economic life. May 5 is also Liberation Day in the Netherlands, in memory of the end of Nazi occupation during the Second World War.

There are over a million people of Dutch origin in Canada, having settled in Western Canada as early as the 1890s. In the 1920s, Dutch Canadians became essential to our economy. They worked on farms, in factories and in homes. Many more immigrated to Canada after the Second World War.

Let us remember and honour the sacrifices made by former members of the Canadian Armed Forces during the liberation of the Netherlands.

As Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, I invite you to learn more about Dutch heritage and the many roles Dutch Canadians have played in building our country.
