OTTAWA – May 5, 2024 – Today, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Canada Opportunities Agency, issued the following statement:

“Today marks the start of the 29th edition of Emergency Preparedness Week. It’s a great opportunity for Canadians to prepare for any emergency. With this year’s theme, “Be Prepared. Know your risks”, I encourage Canadians to learn about the disaster risks that could affect their region, and the steps they can take to protect themselves, their families and their homes.

When emergencies strike, we can thank our first responders and emergency management professionals for their quick action, expertise and bravery. We recognize and celebrate the incredible work they do, and I am personally grateful for their service and efforts to keep our communities safe.

Climate change continues to have a significant impact on the extreme weather events and disasters that directly affect our communities. We’ve seen an increase in the frequency and severity of floods, forest fires, winter storms, heat waves and hurricanes. As a result, it’s more important than ever to improve our emergency preparedness. This includes familiarizing ourselves with the measures we need to take before these situations occur.

We can all prepare for emergencies by knowing what we need to know. risks in our region. One important step that everyone can take is to prepare a emergency kit and develop a emergency plan for your home. If you already have a kit and a plan, take the opportunity to review them with the members of your household to make sure they’re up to date and include everything you need.

In addition, Public Safety is pleased to launch a new series of social media challenges for you to win an emergency kit. We encourage you to share information on X or Facebook about your own and your household’s emergency preparedness, using the keywords #SEC2024Week or #EveryEventPreparedness.
