The Government of Canada, through the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, helps connect Canadians and their shared history. Each designation of a historically significant person, place or event makes its unique contribution to the tapestry of stories that constitute our past and together shape our identity.

Today, the Honorable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced the appointment of Mr. Bernard Thériault, representative of New Brunswick, as the new President of the Commission . In addition, Minister Guilbeault announced the appointment of the following provincial and territorial representatives: Stephen Azzi (Ontario), Harry Holman (Prince Edward Island), Valerie Korinek (Saskatchewan) and Jessica Kotierk (Nunavut).

Each member of the Commission brings a unique and valuable perspective that contributes to advancing the important work the Commission has done for over a century to commemorate the people, places and events that have shaped Canada’s history. Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada are committed to ensuring that national historic designations reflect a broad range of stories from Canadian history. Together, these stories feature different voices, perspectives and experiences, including touching on difficult times from our past.

Canadians value our shared history and recognize the importance of knowing our country’s history and each other. Understanding history creates engaged citizens, promotes critical thinking, encourages civic responsibility, and produces a more inclusive society.

Established in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada on the national historic significance of people, places and events that have marked history from Canada. Parks Canada supports the work of the Commission by providing professional and administrative services, including conducting the historical and archaeological research necessary to evaluate nominations.

In collaboration with Parks Canada, the Commission ensures that elements of national historic significance are recognized and that these important stories are communicated to Canadians through the National Historical Commemoration Program.
