Senator Rosen Successfully Pushed The President To Include The New Hospital In His 2024 Budget Request
Legislative Approval Will Further Advance Building of New Reno Veterans Hospital
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) helped introduce bipartisan legislation to officially authorize the construction of a new veterans hospital in Reno. Passage of this bill is the next step needed in the process to construct a new VA hospital, and it follows Senator Rosen’s successful push with Senator Cortez Masto to include the hospital in the President’s 2024 Budget Request. The bipartisan Fiscal Year 2024 Veterans Affairs Major Medical Facility Authorization Act allows the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to officially change the scope of the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System project from a previously-approved renovation of the existing facility to the construction of a new veterans medical center.
“With many veterans in Northern Nevada relying on the VA hospital in Reno for medical treatment, I’m laser focused on making sure the new, state-of-the-art facility I secured gets built,” said Senator Rosen. “After successfully pushing the President to include a new VA medical center in Reno in his budget, we now need Congressional approval to start building it. That’s why I’m working across the aisle to introduce this bipartisan bill, and finally allow construction to proceed for the new hospital our veterans deserve.”
This legislation builds upon historic infrastructure investments in the Rosen-backed PACT Act, which expands VA health care eligibility to all veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards during their service. The PACT Act invested in VA’s infrastructure workforce through new recruitment and retention incentives and provides funding for 31 new facilities in 19 states. Senator Rosen has been leading bipartisan efforts to support Nevada’s veterans. Last month, she introduced bipartisan legislation to permanently maintain a helpline for veterans to obtain information and assistance with all services from the VA. In the recent bipartisan government funding package, Senator Rosen secured funding to increase access to affordable housing for veterans, continue building Nevada’s first national veterans cemetery in Elko, and increase funding for veteran’s access to telehealth.
