WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (Kan.) – ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies – today questioned U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on violent crime and the national security threats facing the United States during a committee hearing to review the President’s FY2025 Budget Request for the Department of Justice.

“Kansans and all Americans are facing extraordinary threats to our security both at home and abroad. The Department of Justice is an integral component of addressing those challenges,” said Sen. Moran. “President Biden’s failures at the southern border have led to a national security and humanitarian crisis, with grave repercussions. We lost the ability to manage, or in some cases even know, who is crossing our borders. That includes agents of foreign powers, potential terrorists and others who mean to undermine our institutions.”

“Events in the Middle East, including Hamas’ vicious attack on Israel on October 7, and Iran’s support for proxy forces across the region, have dramatically elevated the risk of a terrorist attack in the United States,” continued Sen. Moran.

“Violent crime continues to plague communities across the country,” said Sen. Moran. “Modest declines in the FBI’s Unified Crime Reporting statistics mean little when compared to the experiences of people across the country who have been harmed or traumatized by crime. In addition, the cyber capabilities of our enemies are continuing to improve putting our systems at greater risk.”

“We live in a dangerous world,” continued Sen. Moran. “I wish to be helpful in making certain we are able to address and reduce those safety and national security issues. I hope the conversation we have today will instill confidence in the American people that the Department of Justice is working to address threats like these and to make our communities a safer place.”
