WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) released the following statement after Senate Democrats denied the people of Wyoming the right to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable for willfully skirting the rule of law and endangering the American people.
“The people of Wyoming deserve the transparency a full trial in the Senate affords them, not the rushed and largely symbolic debate Leader Schumer led on the Senate floor. By not holding a full trial, Senate Democrats broke from more than 200 years of tradition and silenced the people of Wyoming by denying them the opportunity to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable for his systemic and deliberate failures to uphold our immigration laws,” said Lummis. “For more than three years, the people of Wyoming have endured the costly consequences of this administration’s open border policies that have ceded control of the southwest border to dangerous cartels, jeopardized our national security and awarded billions of taxpayer dollars to support people unlawfully residing in the United States. I am deeply disappointed my Democrat colleagues have once again turned a blind eye to Secretary Mayorkas’ self-inflicted border crisis and chosen politics over protecting American citizens.”
Under Secretary Mayorkas, there have been more than 9.2 million illegal crossings from 160 countries unlawfully entering the United States. This administration’s turnstile policies have made every community in America a border community and cost American taxpayers billions of dollars. Chicago spends more than $20 million per month to “house and support” illegal aliens, and New York City is expected to spend $12 billion between 2022-2025 on taxpayer-sponsored services for illegal immigrants.
While American communities navigate the financial strain stemming from Secretary Mayorkas-sponsored handouts, cartels are earning as much as $13 billion from their human smuggling and trafficking operations.
