- Miles Government nears completion on 12 new social homes in Whitsundays region
- Part of Homes for Queenslanders plan to boost social housing Big Build
Builders are making the finishing touches on 12 new social homes in Cannonvale as the Miles Government builds more Homes for Queenslanders.
It follows the announcement earlier this year by the Miles Government to boost the state’s social housing Big Build with an ambitious target of 53,500 social homes in Queensland by 2046.
Configured as two, two-storey buildings, the development is located next to Bicentennial Park. It is also close to a bus stop, Cannonvale State School, Whitsunday Shopping Centre, and Cannonvale Beach.
The ground level includes four, one-bedroom homes designed to Gold Level accessibility standards.
These include features such as level thresholds, wider doorways, hallways and clearances, and features such as wall ovens.
The two, one-bedroom homes on the ground level are designed to Platinum Level accessibility and have additional clearance and circulation spaces.
These homes also include features such as lower kitchen benchtops and removable cupboards under the kitchen sink and cooktop, making them particularly suitable for people who mobilise in wheelchairs.
The multi-purpose space in these Platinum Level homes could be used as storage, a study, or as space for an overnight guest.

“The LNP saw social housing go backwards in Queensland by 428 homes, and now they think our Homes for Queenslanders plan is too much – so the question the LNP must answer is what would they cut? Is it homes like these?”

“To build more homes like this and to build them faster we’re bolstering the workforce by offering free TAFE and apprenticeships.
“Because we won’t cut funding and shutdown TAFE like the LNP did, and the opportunities they give to Queenslanders to get a job, and build the homes we need.”
