WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 6408, a commonsense, bipartisan bill introduced by Reps. Brad Schneider (IL-10) and David Kustoff (TN-08) that would revoke the tax-exempt status of any organization that provides financial support or resources to designated terrorist groups. H.R. 6408 passed by a vote of 382 to 11.

Rep. Schneider released the following statement on passage of the bill: “This past weekend, Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, for the first-time firing cruise and ballistic missiles as well as suicide attack drones from Iranian territory in one of the largest such attacks in history. Fortunately, a coalition of Israeli, U.S., U.K., Jordanian, French and other allies defeated 99 percent of the missiles and drones before they were able to reach their intended targets.

Still, Iran’s flagrant attack on Israel, and its alliance with terrorist organizations around the world, makes it even clearer that we must do everything we can to assist our ally Israel and disempower terrorist organizations. This commonsense legislation is an important step toward cutting off financing for Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups from maligned non-profit organizations, such as the Holy Land Foundation, who have already been prosecuted for funneling money to Hamas and others. Any organization providing material support to terrorist organizations must be held accountable and denied the privilege of tax-exempt status. I’m proud to have worked with my colleague from across the aisle, Rep. David Kustoff, on this critical bill.

While this bill is an important action, I still call on Speaker Johnson to bring forward the bipartisan, Senate-passed legislation that will provide desperately needed assistance to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan to the House floor for a vote. Anything less will be insufficient.”
