According to Statistics Botswana, headline inflation decreased from 3.9 percent in February to 2.9 percent in March 2024, breaching the lower bound of the medium-term objective range of 3 – 6 percent, and was significantly lower than the 9.9 percent in March 2023. The decrease in inflation between February and March 2024 is mainly due to base effects associated with the upward adjustment of domestic fuel prices in March 2023, as well as the deceleration in the rate of annual price change for most categories of goods and services, while for some, prices were generally unchanged. Inflation for domestic tradeables decreased from 4.6 percent to 4.3 percent between February 2024 and March 2024, due to a broad-based deceleration in food price increases. Similarly, imported tradeables inflation significantly decreased from 4.7 percent to 2.6 percent in the same period, mainly on account of the base effects associated with the increase in domestic fuel prices in March 2023. As a result, all tradeables inflation decreased from 4.7 percent to 3 percent in the corresponding period. Meanwhile, inflation for non-tradeables remained unchanged at 2.8 percent in the same period.

Likewise, the 16 percent trimmed mean inflation and the inflation excluding administered prices decreased from 3.7 percent and 4.1 percent to 2.6 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively, in the same period.
