Bern, 08.04.2024 – On April 8, 2024, the Norwegian Minister of Transport, Jon-Ivar Nygård, was on a working visit to Bern and discussed the characteristics of the railway sector specific to Switzerland and Norway with Federal Councilor Albert Rösti.

Norway is preparing its new National Transport Plan. This sets investment intentions in the transport sector for the next twelve years. In this context, Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård was explained the Swiss rail system and the role of the Confederation in the supervision and financing of public transport by his Swiss counterpart, Albert Rösti, on April 8, 2024.

Federal Councilor Albert Rösti presented to his Norwegian counterpart Jon-Ivar Nygård how the railway infrastructure fund works and how the infrastructure development is taking place within the framework of the strategic development programme. Regarding public transport, Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård was particularly interested in Switzerland’s experiences with the division of roles between transport companies and federal authorities.

Norway and Switzerland have topographical and climatic similarities, making their experiences in building and maintaining transportation infrastructure comparable. Although Switzerland is nine times smaller than Norway, its railway network is larger and denser. As for the Norwegian network, it extends to the Arctic Circle and is two-thirds electrified.
