Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced that the Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honorable Mary Simon, will visit the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, United States of America, from March 9 to 12, 2024, to attend the Arctic Winter Games.
The Governor General will use her visit to Alaska to encourage athletes, participate in cultural activities, meet with indigenous leaders and promote the importance of reconciliation with indigenous peoples around the world.
The Arctic Winter Games welcome approximately 2,000 Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants, making it one of the largest cultural and multi-sport events in the region. Modern sports, traditional Arctic sports, Dene games, workshops, shows, visual arts exhibitions and education programs: a variety of activities highlighting the cultural richness of the North will be organized.

The Arctic Winter Games are a multi-sport and cultural event held every two years by groups from the Arctic region. The Games promote intercultural exchange and openness among the diverse indigenous peoples of the Arctic. The 2024 Arctic Winter Games take place March 10-16. To find out more about the Games. The first Arctic Winter Games were held in 1970 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The Government of Canada supports Canadian athletes who travel to participate in the Arctic Winter Games. Canadian participants represent five regions, namely Yukon, Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta, Nunavut and Nunavik. The Games also bring together athletes from Alaska (United States of America), Greenland (Denmark) and the Sápmi region (Finland, Sweden and Norway). The Governor General undertakes official travel abroad at the request of the Prime Minister and in support of the Government of Canada’s international objectives in foreign policy, diplomacy and trade.
