FedDev Ontario invests in and showcases women-led projects

There International Women’s Day is a globally recognized day to highlight the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Honorable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), highlighted the achievements of women entrepreneurs in the region.

Today, Minister Tassi and Valerie Bradford, Member of Parliament for Kitchener South—Hespeler, announced an investment of $525,000 from the Government of Canada for Spa Dent Inc., a woman-owned and operated business. This investment will allow the company to increase production of its environmentally friendly oral care products, enter new markets and create 10 jobs. In 2023, as part of the “Game Changers: Leading Companies. Powered by Women » Spa Dent Inc. was named in the report “Game Changers» as one of 100 women-led businesses driving change.

Minister Tassi also spoke at the 2024 International Women’s Day Symposium, organized by Community Futures Middlesex. She spoke about the importance of empowering women entrepreneurs through the Government of Canada’s partnership with the region’s 36 Community Futures Development Corporations that provide targeted services and financial support to businesses in rural communities across the region. In downtown Stratford, the minister and representatives of the Downtown Stratford Business Improvement Association visited high street businesses run by women: Wills , Ånde And El Cactus Taco Shop, who received funding under the My Main Street program. Thanks to an investment of 15 million dollars from FedDev Ontario in the Canadian Urban Institute, eligible businesses and organizations in southern Ontario can now benefit from additional support through the program My main street. Yesterday, Minister Tassi and the Honorable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Oakville, visited Dough Parlor, a woman-run natural playdough manufacturer. Minister Tassi and the Honorable Karina Gould, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Burlington then visited Foli, a direct-to-consumer plant delivery service run by women. During the visits, they learned more about the experiences of local women entrepreneurs, while celebrating the recent growth of both businesses.

Minister Tassi also visited the Haltech Regional Innovation Center to meet young entrepreneurs. They shared their unique experiences as well as the advantages they enjoy and the challenges they face as entrepreneurs. Minister Tassi also celebrated the achievements of women in the region, attending the “Women of Distinction” event hosted by the YWCA of Hamilton.
