Bern, 08.03.2024 – At its meeting on March 8, 2024, the Federal Council appointed Christoph Baumann, currently deputy head of the Planning and Strategy Division of the State Secretariat for International Financial Matters (SFI), to represent Switzerland at the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington. Christoph Baumann will begin his four-year mandate on November 1, 2024. He will first serve as deputy for two years, before taking up the position of administrator.

Christoph Baumann, 39, has been working at the SFI since June 2020. In his current role as Deputy Head of the Planning and Strategy Division, he is both Special Envoy for Sustainable Finance and Deputy the Swiss “G20 Deputy” and coordinator for Switzerland’s participation in the financial aspect of the G20. Before joining the SFI, Christoph Baumann worked for the Swiss National Bank in the area of financial stability and had previously participated in the establishment of a securities trader. Holder of a master’s degree in economics from the University of Zurich, he has also followed several additional training courses.

Christoph Baumann will begin his four-year term in Washington on November 1, 2024, succeeding the current administrator, Marcel Peter. In accordance with the alternation system which provides for a rotation every two years, he will assume the function of deputy of the Polish administrator for the first two years, before occupying the position of administrator, subject to his nomination by the group voting within the IMF. Switzerland’s representative on the IMF Executive Board is responsible for defending the country’s interests at the strategic, operational and administrative levels.

In addition to Switzerland and Poland, Switzerland’s voting group within the Bretton Woods institutions includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Serbia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
