Ottawa, Ontario – The Atlantic Ocean provides Canadians with food, jobs, energy, and recreation. Its ecosystems and resources are vitally important to our economy, our environment, and our cultures. That’s why Canada is proud to work with like-minded countries to take coordinated action to study the Atlantic Ocean and find ocean science solutions to help protect it.

Today, the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honorable Diane Lebouthillier, announced that Canada will host the Pan-Atlantic Alliance for Ocean Research and Innovation Forum (the Alliance) of 2024 at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario, October 8-10, 2024. The annual Forum will bring together representatives from the Atlantic community, including Alliance partners such as Argentina, Brazil, Cabo Verde, the European Union, Morocco, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Forum 2024 will focus on opportunities for scientific collaboration, including coordinating ocean observation efforts, and improving our understanding of the relationship between the ocean and climate.

Minister Lebouthillier also announced the publication of the report Canada’s Oceans Now: Atlantic Ecosystems, 2022. The report, prepared by Fisheries and Oceans Canada with contributions from Environment and Climate Change Canada, provides an overview of the state of the Atlantic Ocean of Canada. This is the second report released by the Department on the state of the Atlantic Ocean and in a series informing Canadians of the state of Canada’s oceans. The report was endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO as an activity of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Our Atlantic Ocean is changing and is having a huge impact on the coastal communities that depend on it. By continuing research and monitoring of Atlantic Ocean ecosystems with its partners, Canada is in a better position to contribute to the necessary knowledge and solutions aimed at informing decisions on ocean sustainability and respecting the commitments we have made under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Atlantic Partnership.
