Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Trade Subcommittee, released the following statement on the announcement United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai has requested dispute settlement consultations with Canada over Canada’s new tax on digital services under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA):

“This action by USTR is welcome news. In July, I made a call with Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith and Committee Republicans for a quick and decisive response to Canada’s digital services tax. This policy unfairly targets American businesses and reneges on its USMCA commitments. The Biden-Harris administration’s retreat from defending American trade interests has invited belligerence toward our world-leading industries. Protecting innovation and productivity demands aggressive action. I urge President Biden to stand up for American workers and job creators and will continue to closely follow this dispute process.”
