Chicago, IL— Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement announcing $12.2 million in Shelter & Services Program (SSP) funding for the City of Chicago. The funding is part of over $380 million authorized by Congress for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to directly support communities that are providing critical assistance such as food, shelter, clothing, acute medical care, and transportation to new arrivals.
“Conscious of the commitment IL-03 and Chicago have made to welcoming new arrivals, I’ve worked to ensure federal resources support local governments and organizations as they ensure the safety and self-sufficiency of our new neighbors. The delivery of over $12.2 million in additional SSP funding represents a needed fiscal infusion to support ongoing efforts. However, much more funding is needed to continue providing life-saving services to our neighbors in need and to fully resource our communities,” said Congresswoman Ramirez.
“I am laser-focused on ensuring the federal government develops comprehensive initiatives–like the Destination Reception Services Program–that dedicate funding to improve intergovernmental coordination, promote self-sufficiency for migrants, and reduce overall costs,” added Congresswoman Ramirez, referencing her legislation, the Destination Reception Assistance Act.
