The Grand Council once again demonstrates its commitment to cantonal bilingualism, for the bridges it helps build between French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland. On 9 September, an event on the theme of the challenges of bilingualism in the hospital world will be organised for members of the cantonal parliament during the lunch break. The conference will bring together the Director of Health Pierre Alain Schnegg, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Insel Gruppe, Bernhard Pulver, the Director of the Bienne Hospital Centre, Kristian Schneider, and the Director of the Bilingualism Forum, Virginie Borel.

In the Bernese Grand Council, it is customary for each member of parliament to speak in their own language, in Swiss German or French. On 9 September, elected representatives who wish to do so will be able to say a few words in the other language. Professional assistance will be made available for the occasion to facilitate the task of the representatives of the people, with the support of the Central Language Services of the State Chancellery.

This spotlight on Bernese bilingualism echoes the European Day of Languages on 26 September, which the Confederation has been promoting since 2019 in the form of multilingualism days in the federal administration and the Federal Parliament. The event at the Grand Council is organised in partnership with the BERN Bilingual Association and the Forum for Bilingualism.
