Bern, 03.09.2024 – As part of the evaluation of a new artillery system, the Federal Office of Armament armasuisse has completed practical tests of the three systems on the shortlist. The tests took place in collaboration with industry and the armed forces between January 2023 and June 2024, in Switzerland and abroad, and verified whether the systems met the requirements. The results and conclusions will be evaluated in the coming months and compiled in an evaluation report.

At the end of the pre-evaluation, the Federal Office of Armament armasuisse selected three systems for the evaluation: Archer mobile howitzer from the Swedish company BAE Systems Bofors and, from the German company KNDS, the RCH 155 systems with Boxer mobility platform and AGM Artillery Gun Module with Piranha mobility platform.

Evaluation – a complex and decisive phase

Since the beginning of 2023, the three systems on the shortlist have been extensively tested and analysed with industry and the military in practical trials in Switzerland and abroad. Logistical clarifications, technical firing tests, mobility tests and troop trials took place with each of the three prototypes from industry. This included checking whether the systems met the project objectives and military requirements, whether they were suitable for the militia and whether the performance promised by the manufacturers was achieved.

Formal requests for offers relating to contractual and commercial aspects as well as operating costs are taking place in parallel with the practical tests. The results obtained and the conclusions of the practical tests will be evaluated in the coming months and compiled in the evaluation report. Together with the offers received, this will form the basis for the decision on the type of vehicle to be used. The acquisition will be proposed in one of the next army messages.

Aim and purpose of the project

The M109 armoured howitzers currently in service, dating from the 1960s, will reach the end of their service life in a few years and will have to be replaced by a new, modern artillery system. The project “Artillerie Wirkplattform et Wirkmittel 2026” (Artillery Platform and Effectors 2026 – Art WPWM 26) is to ensure the maintenance and development of the indirect fire capability at medium engagement distances with increased range, precision and mobility.
