May 2, 2024 Calgary, Alberta

Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, announced a federal investment of $9,056 to Experience Church under the Security Infrastructure Project Financing Program (SIPFP).

This investment allowed the Experience Church to install exterior lighting to limit vandalism, theft and break-ins.

Since 2007, the Government of Canada has invested a total of $24.5 million in more than 770 projects to help Canadian communities threatened by hate-motivated crimes protect and strengthen the security of their community centres, places of worship and other institutions.

Quotes

“No one in Canada should have to fear for their safety when attending a religious service. The investment announced today will help increase the sense of security for those attending Experience Church.”

– The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs

“Thanks to the PFPIS, we were able to install a lighting system for the parking lot, which allowed us to limit acts of delinquency, vandalism, theft and break-ins in the church. We have seen a significant reduction in these acts since the end of the project.”

– Jason Klammer, associate pastor of Experience Church

Quick Facts

The PFPIS is designed to help communities threatened by hate-motivated crimes improve their security infrastructure, which will help make Canada safer for all Canadians.

$15 million has been invested through the PFPIS to support more than 600 projects.

Funding is available to private non-profit organizations with ties to a community at risk of hate crime. Approved projects may receive up to 50% of the total project cost, to a maximum of $100,000 per project.

Interested organizations representing places of worship, provincially and territorially recognized private educational institutions, community centres and gender-based violence shelters can obtain more information on the Public Safety Canada website.

In 2023-2024, through the Expanded Security Infrastructure Projects Program (ESIPP), the Government of Canada invested an additional $9.5 million for 173 projects.

Organizations that experience a serious and direct hate crime against their institution may qualify for the Serious Hate Incident Support (SHIIS) stream, a priority funding process under the SIP that is available outside of the regular annual application period. Interested organizations can obtain more information on the Public Safety Canada website.
