Question for written answer  E-001511/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Tom Vandendriessche (PfE)

Recent reports have highlighted serious errors that were made during Belgium’s triple elections on 9 June, including granting improper voting access to 16-17-year-olds and European nationals of other EU Member States.

Furthermore, a report from the College of Experts responsible for overseeing electronic voting systems indicates long-standing concerns about procedural flaws and technical errors, such as inaccuracies in voter card activation. These issues have allegedly compromised the accuracy of vote counts and potentially impacted the distribution of seats in the elections.

In the light of these developments:

  • 1.What measures is the Commission prepared to take to ensure that democratic processes in Belgium adhere to the highest standards of transparency, fairness and reliability?
  • 2.Does it plan to conduct its own assessment or investigation into the reported irregularities in the Belgian elections?
  • 3.What actions does it recommend to address concerns over the integrity of electronic voting systems across the EU, particularly in the light of these recent events in Belgium?
