From July 8 to July 21, the Institute of Informatics Systems SB RAS with the support of NSU and Mathematic center in Akademgorodok holds the 49th Summer School of Young Programmers named after A.P. Ershov (LSYUP).

The Summer School for Young Programmers was founded in 1976 by academician Andrei Petrovich Ershov and is held annually by the Institute of Social Sciences of the SB RAS. LSUP gave rise to computer science as an academic discipline in schools and formed a circle of specialists who are still leaders in the global community of programmers. Traditionally, the LSHUP is held under the guidance of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A. G. Marchuk.

Mikhail Fedoruk, rector of NSU, noted at the opening ceremony of the School that Andrei Petrovich Ershov was a wonderful person, who is known not only in our country, but also abroad, and is considered a programming classic.

“That’s why it’s very pleasant and symbolic that the school now bears his name.”

Mikhail Fedoruk congratulated everyone on the opening of the school and mentioned that the university infrastructure is currently being updated, construction of a world-class NSU campus, including the construction of new dormitories. Therefore, future generations of students will have the opportunity to study in more comfortable conditions, as well as engage in project and research work in modern laboratories.

Sergey Goncharov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Discrete Mathematics and Informatics MFaculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU, compared the current, fundamentally new stage in the development of programming systems with the tasks that the founders of Akademgorodok solved during its founding:

— This school is dedicated to mathematics, physics, and programming, which reflects a certain attitude of the founders of the Siberian branch towards education and training and corresponds to the tasks that they faced during the development of Akademgorodok. The founders of our scientific center were certain revolutionaries in science and worked in the most important, promising areas. Andrey Petrovich Ershov is a unique specialist who, in the wake of the creation of computer technology, became involved in the development of new approaches, programs, and languages. To create large software projects, it was necessary to develop completely new theoretical programming. Now we are also experiencing some kind of revolutionary moment associated with the emergence of large language models, GPT chat. Specialists are now required to have universal knowledge – mathematics, humanities, linguistics, programming, and technology. The development of artificial intelligence systems, its correct use – this task will now have to be solved by you – the new generation of scientists and developers of software systems.

This year school is being held in a hybrid format. The preparatory part of the school will be online. Open online lectures and self-study based on materials from the organizers are planned. Work in the workshops will take place on the basis of NSU in full-time mode. Within the framework of the LSHUP there will be work in workshops, master classes from practicing specialists, as well as lectures, quizzes and competitions.

— A distinctive feature of the Summer School for Young Programmers is its unique form of training. Classes are held in small workshop groups (4-7 people) under the guidance of researchers, NSU teachers, IT specialists, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. The working day lasts from 10 to 18 hours with a lunch break. This year, 10 workshops are planned in various areas. Students learn a new programming language, work on a final project, while simultaneously listening to lectures from experts in various fields. So, in addition to lectures on programming, for example, from Excelsior-Huawei employees on system programming, this year schoolchildren will listen to a lecture on the “ideal language” from the oldest employee of the Programming Department of the Computing Center of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences (Ershov Department), Ph.D. Sergei Borisovich Pokrovsky, lecture by Doctor of Biological Sciences. Tatyana Kolesnikova about problems in biology, a master class from the CFT company not only about testing, but also about self-determination with a profession and about building feedback, about machine learning, a lecture about TRIZ by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Alexander Guryevich Marchuk, lecture on cycloids Ph.D. Egor Andreevich Nasibulov, a lecture on the Sun, its activity and influence on the Earth by Professor Lva Pustilnik and more,” said Associate Professor of the KDMiI MMF and SUSC NSU Tatiana Tikhonova.
