Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Puglia, Italy.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President von der Leyen discussed the close relationship between Canada and the European Union (EU) and expressed their pleasure in continuing to work together to advance their shared priorities, such as collaboration in the area of artificial intelligence and that of research and innovation, particularly within the framework of Horizon Europe.

The leaders also discussed the importance of close collaboration between Canada and the EU on their economic interests, including advancing work on critical minerals and addressing concerns related to overcapacity and d other anti-market policies and practices. The Prime Minister discussed EU efforts to tackle these issues, including plans to impose new tariffs on motor vehicles on China.

The Prime Minister congratulated the EU on the successful conduct of the European Parliament elections. He underlined the magnitude of the task of holding this essential democratic process on such a large scale and despite challenges such as foreign interference.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine and stressed the importance of global solidarity in fostering a just and lasting peace. They are said to be looking forward to participating in the Ukraine Peace Summit, which will be held on June 15-16, 2024 in Switzerland.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President von der Leyen agreed to remain in close contact and looked forward to seeing each other again soon.
