WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Education and Workforce Committee passed Congressman Bob Good’s Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act by a vote of 23 to 16. This legislation states that a student athlete may not be considered an employee of an institution, conference, or association. Rep. Good’s bill seeks to preserve the integrity of collegiate athletics and safeguard educational opportunities for student-athletes.

“As a former college wrestler, I strongly believe America’s long tradition of college athletics should not be ruined by reclassifying student-athletes as employees, or moving to unionization,” said Good. “I am very pleased that my committee colleagues voted in support of my efforts to maintain a balance between athletics and academics, ensuring that college sports programs remain viable, beneficial, and enjoyable for all student athletes.”

H.R. 8534 is now Rep. Good’s 5th bill of the 118th Congress that has been reported out of Committee and eligible to receive consideration on the House floor.
