Launched in 2020, the “enchanted marquees” festival offers families fun activities under marquees promoting parent-child bonding. This summer offer aims to stimulate creativity, movement and language in children aged 0 to 4. It also strengthens social bonds and integration. See you from July 3 to September 8, 2024 in six municipalities in the canton of Geneva.

In 2020, the pandemic froze the world and social connections were drastically reduced, often confined to the virtual sphere. The pandemic has caused the closure of all childcare facilities, including those for preschool children, as well as play areas in parks. However, activities and interactions are crucial to cognitive development and emotional security at this age. In addition, for families whose social circle was limited, which is often the case for newly arrived immigrants, the closure of reception centers was synonymous with social isolation.

A festival to face the pandemic

Faced with these challenges, the Office of Integration and Citizenship (BIC) set up, in the summer of 2020, the free festival “Les Chapiteaux Enchantés”, in partnership with the towns of Carouge and Lancy. In the green spaces of these communities, children and their parents were able to listen to lullabies, discover sounds with an ethno-musician, interact around a kamishibai or learn about making puppets and prepare a short show for their children. parents.

From the first edition, attendance exceeded the expectations of the BIC and the municipalities, with more than 300 families joining the festival, all smiles. In 2024, “the enchanted marquees” will be renewed for the fifth consecutive year, in six Geneva municipalities. Behind the enchantment, a demanding device

Beyond the wonder of children and the satisfaction of parents, it is a real system for the attention of the population which is deployed, aiming at several objectives. First, in the face of health restrictions, it was a question of ensuring the maintenance of activities guaranteeing the language, cognitive, physical and social development of children under 4 years old. After the lifting of health restrictions, the “enchanted marquees” continue to meet this objective: during school holidays, many reception centers close and families with modest incomes do not always have the means to offer stimulating activities and fun for their children.

Next, the festival supports parenthood. Becoming a parent constitutes a great upheaval and is a source of vulnerability, especially when one’s family and social fabric is abroad. Under the marquees, mediators and young child professionals surround families, answer questions and have teaching and educational tools at their disposal to promote links between parents and children, which further strengthens the child’s good development.

Finally, “the enchanted marquees” provide a barrier to social isolation. For families, particularly immigrants, who do not benefit from close family or professional support due to lack of resources, the closure of reception centers in the summer is also synonymous with isolation. Under the marquees, links are forged between families and information is communicated on the services available in the town throughout the year. Thus, the integration of newly arrived immigrant families takes place in a marquee during the summer.
