WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-07) – the only Michigander on the House Agriculture Committee – released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced new funding to combat the spread of Avian Flu:

“This is a big deal. Hundreds of millions of dollars will now be focused on assisting our producers in identifying cases of avian flu, mitigating its spread, and compensating impacted operations, which remains a top concern in my district. We know that food security is national security, so I applaud this step to free up additional resources that will meet the threat of this virus head on.”

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $824 million in new funding to support efforts to identify, understand, and address cases of HPAI in poultry and livestock, along with a new voluntary pilot program to provide alternative testing and movement options for farmers.

Amid detections of avian flu in Michigan, Slotkin has been in close contact with local, state, and federal agriculture authorities to ensure communities are supported. That includes a visit from Agriculture Secretary Vilsack, who heard directly from the Michigan agriculture community about how avian flu has impacted them at the end of April.
