This week, in a special D-Day 80 edition of the 60 Second Update, we are focussing on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Here RAF personnel read the poem, ‘D-Day’, written by Poet and retired civil servant, Antony Roe.

To the thousands of allied soldiers who fought for our freedom, we remember their sacrifice.

About the poem’s author

D-Day, is one of many poems written by Anthony Roe.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Roe is a retired civil-servant, who worked at RAF Honington for over 40 years. He worked in several teams before settling with the Station Warrant Officers Maintenance Team (SWOs Gang). Here, he spent time tending to the Station Memorial Gardens – a place where families and service personnel remember RAF Regiment Gunners, who died serving their country.

A lifelong artist, Tony has written thousands of poems, mostly related to Service and past conflicts. He draws his inspiration from his own experiences and the experiences of the many military personnel he has worked with over the years. His work is now being collated and shared with care homes for the elderly, including veterans, throughout Suffolk and Norfolk.

Tony is still in touch with his friends at RAF Honington and is very proud for his work to play a small part in honouring those who gave so much.
