Head of the early childhood service of the City of Meyrin, Isabelle Kovacs answers questions from the integration and citizenship office (BIC) on the municipality’s participation in the “enchanted marquees”, a free festival intended for accompanied toddlers of their parents.

What is the added value for the town of Meyrin from participating in the enchanted marquees?

The town of Meyrin was able to take part in the enchanted marquees during the second edition, in 2021, and from the start, the event was a great success. This enthusiasm has continued to grow over the years, reaching more than 700 people in 2023. Beyond the attendance which demonstrates the clear interest of families, the enchanted marquees present added value for the town both through the objectives pursued only by the quality of the artistic and playful proposals which are produced.

Meyrin presents, through its resident population, a strong cultural diversity with more than 140 nationalities represented. While this undeniably constitutes an asset, it also brings challenges in terms of integration, particularly for vulnerable families, whatever their origins. The free nature of the event allows universal access, and very concretely encourages the participation of more precarious families. Thus, the enchanted marquees fully participate in social cohesion within a given territory for families with very young children, often lacking activities during the summer periods.

In addition, the enchanted capitals aim to awaken the child in all his areas of development; at the cultural and artistic, sensorimotor, emotional, linguistic and cognitive levels. Through the variety and quality of the activities offered, children and their parents explore, together and freely, driven by their thirst for discovery. And at the heart of the experience, the parent-child bond is strengthened.

How do the enchanted capitals fit in with other Meyrin parenting support systems?

The enchanted marquees are part of the parenting support system of the early childhood service led by the families, neighborhood life, networks center, the main objective of which is to develop early encouragement offers for families in Meyrin, and more specifically for those who do not have access to childcare facilities. Projects and services dedicated to families are supported by a team of childhood educators, specialized in parenting support.

At the Meyrin early childhood service, we have chosen to work on parenting support as often as possible in a multidisciplinary manner. The complementarity of perspectives and professional skills increases the scope of the action carried out. The same goes for the enchanted marquees where families are welcomed and supported jointly by the pole’s team of educators with the cultural mediators from the Mes Bottes de 7 lieues Association. For us, it is not simply a question of hosting a “turnkey” event, but of bringing it to life within our system, and thus making the link with all the services offered for families. It is creating a common and coherent thread for parents and children, with the team of educators from the family center as a guide.

Do you have a memorable memory or an anecdote to share that you experienced during the enchanted marquees?

It’s not so much an anecdote, but rather emotions that come to me when I think of enchanted capitals. I must say that they live up to their name, because it is the enchantment that one feels when seeing the children and their parents, so joyful, passing from one marquee to another, in light and light traffic. fluid, like a choreography. Each time it is a new experience, which arouses the children’s curiosity. It is also the emotion that I feel when, as soon as it opens, I see families arriving from the four corners of the park with their strollers, scooters, running or walking, to converge, all smiles towards the marquees. We feel lucky to be able to participate in this.
