Gabriola Island, British Columbia, June 10, 2024 — The federal government is investing up to $1.7 million in rural British Columbia for transit studies, planning projects, and the purchase of vehicles and related infrastructure.

On Gabriola Island, funding will support the community bus service, Gabriola’s Environmentally Responsible Trans-Island Express (GERTIE). Two electric buses will be purchased to replace the two diesel buses currently in service. We will also purchase two chargers for electric vehicles to support the transition to a more environmentally friendly public transportation service.

Indigenous communities from Squamish Nation, Stellat’en First Nation, Xaay Daga Dlaang Corporation and Xatsull First Nation (Soda Creek Indian Band) will also purchase new vehicles. Additionally, Cranbrook, Malahat First Nation, Musqueam Capital Corp and the Regional District of Qathet will undertake transit studies and planning projects with the goal of establishing transit options for their communities.

Further information on the projects can be found in the backgrounder.
