Bern, 11.06.2024 – From June 11 to 13, the Chief of the Army, Corps Commander Thomas Süssli will be received by General Martin Herem, Chief of the Estonian Defense Forces, on the occasion of an official visit to Estonia. They will address, among other things, the situation in Ukraine and its consequences on regional security in Eastern Europe.

Responding to the invitation of his Estonian counterpart, the head of the Army, Corps Commander Thomas Süssli will visit Estonia from June 11 to 13, 2024. During the visit, Corps Commander Süssli and General Herem will discuss in particular the situation in Ukraine and its consequences on regional security in Eastern Europe. Territorial defense and the development of the armed forces will also be discussed. It will also involve identifying possibilities for strengthening bilateral cooperation in training in certain areas, such as cyber defense, and developing existing synergies in multilateral cooperation.

The visit to different commands and infrastructures of the Estonian Defense Forces is planned in Tallinn and Tapa. The Estonian Defense Forces and the Swiss Army maintain close cooperation in selected areas of training. The head of the Army also took the opportunity to visit the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence, hosted in Tallinn, and where the Swiss Army has regularly sent military cyber defense experts since 2021.

Exchanges with partner nations strengthen the army’s defense capacity

In September 2022, the Federal Council indicated in the supplementary report to the 2021 security policy report that it intended, within the framework of the law of neutrality, to increase international cooperation with partner organizations, in particular with NATO and the Member States of the Alliance. Exchanges with partner nations are sources of important lessons for strengthening specific skills. Developing cooperation strengthens the defense capacity of the army and therefore the security of Switzerland.
