The XXVII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, in which the Polytechnic University traditionally actively participated, has ended. In particular, the Polytechnic University’s experience as coordinator of the Russian-African Network University (RAFU) consortium helped to make the most of the potential of the “Water is more valuable than gold” conference.

Experts highlighted the main areas that need attention and those areas in which joint work is already underway. One of the key issues is the shortage of highly qualified personnel. Africa, as the continent with the youngest population, faces a severe shortage of higher education institutions. The activities of RAFU participating universities are aimed at solving this problem from both the Russian and African sides.

We lack specialists in the field of water supply, so we need agreements and memorandums of cooperation with Russia. We need to train personnel, give specialists the opportunity to improve their education and increase their competencies, so that our personnel can undergo internships and train personnel. Russia is now our country’s biggest strategic partner. We signed about twelve agreements and memorandums of cooperation,” said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Mali to the Russian Federation Seydou Kamissoko.

Representatives of relevant ministries from South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Zimbabwe, as well as the ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Mali and Burkina Faso to the Russian Federation spoke at the conference.

Issa Togo, Associate Professor at the Higher School of Hydraulic and Energy Engineering of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, emphasized the practical orientation of the knowledge acquired by students: It is important to teach our students Russian technologies, but in such a way that they are applicable in our countries.

St. Petersburg Polytechnic University presented its cases of successful projects for interaction with African universities and enterprises: centers of Russian language and culture, the Information Center of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and RAFU and many other projects of our university under the auspices of RAFU. The conference became a good opportunity for the exchange of experience between experts who together found innovative solutions to modern challenges in the field of scientific and technical cooperation and retraining of personnel.

RAFU can unite all the efforts of universities, present a more complete image of Russian education and help establish direct contacts with African partners through a single window. RAFU is a connection between countries, the export of business and educational potential, says Maxim Zalyvsky, head of the project office of the Russian-African Network University.
