The Italian Government has taken action to bring ten children from Haiti to Italy. The children have been adopted by Italian families but for security reasons linked to the serious ongoing situation in the Caribbean nation, marred by devastating criminality, they had been unable to leave their places of residence until now (nine were living in the capital Port-au-Prince and one in a small town approximately 200 km away).

The children have been waiting for months to be able to join their Italian families, with whom they have only had contact via video call. The children and staff supporting them took off a few hours ago and are expected to arrive at the military airport in Ciampino (Rome) later today on a flight organised by the Security Services.

This operation was carried out as soon as the minimum conditions returned to guarantee the children’s safety, in order to avoid the risk of the criminal gangs who were recently responsible for the brutal murder of two American missionaries and a Haitian prelate also breaking into the orphanages.

This positive outcome is thanks to the cooperation between AISE [Italian foreign intelligence and security agency], the crisis unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry for the Family, Birth Rate and Equal Opportunities, the Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo, the Honorary Consulate in Port-au-Prince and the Intercountry Adoption Commission.
