Whitbourne RCMP is investigating a string of recent break, enter and thefts at Newfoundland Power Substations in and around the Whitbourne area between May 6-31, 2024. Quantities of copper wire were stolen from each location.

The New Harbour Substation was struck on May 6 and May 31, 2024. The Chapel Arm Substation was struck on May 8 and again on May 28. On May 13, the Holiday Hill Power Poles and Whitbourne Substation were struck.

During these crimes, suspect(s) severed a number of lines, including grounding lines which are extremely dangerous.

“Illegally entering a substation and tampering with the high-voltage electricity system is an extremely dangerous activity. Contact with exposed high-voltage equipment can result in serious injury or death. It creates serious safety risks not only for the vandals, but for employees, contractors, and to the general public.” (Newfoundland Power/NL Hydro).

It is likely these crimes are connected. The investigations are continuing.

Anyone with any information about any of these crimes, those responsible for the thefts or the current location of the stolen wire is asked to contact Whitbourne RCMP at 709-759-2600.
