Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:

“When my Republican colleagues cannot legislate and instead decide to score cheap political points, they fear-monger, punish and silence. Today’s bill invokes a fear of persecution of U.S. service members that is not reasonable since the U.S. – shamefully – is not a party to the Rome Statute. It punishes by weaponizing sanctions against major US allies who support the Court. It silences by restricting funding for the International Criminal Court, weakening it and making us all less safe.

It’s important we remember why the International Criminal Court exists. The Court exists to put an end to the impunity of perpetrators who violate international law and commit unimaginable atrocities that shock the conscience of humanity. Those who support the court recognize that those crimes threaten the peace, security, and well-being of the entire world and accountability helps us prevent future atrocities.

In the last 241 days, thousands have been victims of unimaginable atrocities and we have witnessed violations of international law that threaten the peace of the world. Today, I voted no on H.R. 8282 because I believe we must affirm accountability to international humanitarian law and put an end to impunity for those who violate it.”
