Oversight hearing explores false allegation the Justice Department has been politically “weaponized”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today had the opportunity to discuss Memphis’ violent crime problem and solutions with Attorney General Merrick Garland at an oversight hearing. Congressman Cohen noted that Memphis was the second city to join the Violent Crime Initiative which increases federal resources in specific communities.

Congressman Cohen also discussed with the Attorney General the false suggestion that the Justice Department is “weaponized” and targeting Republicans by noting the Department is currently prosecuting Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Congressman Henry Cuellar of Texas, and Hunter Biden, the President’s son, who are all high-profile Democrats.

In his questions for the Attorney General, Congressman Cohen said in part:

“Has there ever been another time in American history when a president was involved in an insurrection trying to overthrow the government of the United States other than January 6th?”

Garland said: “The answer is no.”
