The Government of Canada recognizes that helping Canadians adopt healthy lifestyle habits is also an investment in creating healthy communities and a healthy country.

The Honorable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, and the Honorable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, today announced more than $9 million in funding to seven organizations under the Fund for the health of Canadians and communities, in order to advance projects that will promote the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits by Canadians, in particular people who are victims of health inequalities. The organizations are: 8 80 Cities, Green Communities Canada, National Capital Region Equitable Recreation Network, Let’s Play Outside Canada, Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation, Sustainable Calgary Society and Unity Health Toronto.

Physical activity is essential for preventing chronic diseases and improving overall health, both physical and mental. It helps people live longer, more fulfilled, more productive and happier lives.

These organizations all have the common goal of creating and promoting programs and infrastructure aimed at promoting physical activity and giving community members the opportunity to engage in physical activity where they live, work and play.
