WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on LGBTQ+ Pride Month:

“Whether in business or the arts, academia or the sciences, government or the armed services, LGBTQ+ Americans have made invaluable contributions to their country – despite their country often failing to grant them the rights, respect, and recognition they deserved. This Pride Month, we honor the LGBTQ+ community and give thanks for LGBTQ+ Americans’ past and present efforts to make our nation live up to the principles of freedom and equality on which it was founded.

“That work is especially important today at a time when many LGBTQ+ people – especially those who are transgender – feel great uncertainty about their place in American society. We each have a responsibility not only to stand against bigotry and discrimination but also to promote inclusion and opportunity for LGBTQ+ Americans. That’s why I have worked with the Congressional Equality Caucus to ensure that Congress stands up for the LGBTQ+ community – from banning Don’t Ask Don’t Tell 14 years ago to enacting the Respect for Marriage Act just last Congress.

“This month, let us recommit ourselves to the cause of equality. May we show the same courage that countless LGBTQ+ Americans have had to display, whether in the streets outside of Stonewall or in the face of intolerance in their daily lives. As we take pride in the LGBTQ+ community and its accomplishments, contributions, and history, let us also take pride in the progress America has made because of them.”
