OTTAWA, June 1, 2024

It’s the start of Italian Heritage Month. In June, we celebrate people of Italian ancestry, their heritage and their contributions that helped create our diverse, vibrant and inclusive country.

In 1881, an Italian community of around 2,000 people lived in the country. During the 2021 census, 1.5 million people claimed to have Italian origins. Canada has one of the largest Italian diasporas in the world, and it is an integral part of Canadian identity. Today, in every major city across the country, people can enjoy the famous neighborhoods known as “Little Italy,” which have become valuable parts of our communities over generations.

We are also grateful for the contributions of people of Italian ancestry in areas such as gastronomy, music, entrepreneurship, education, science and sports. The many community and sports centers established across Canada are examples of this.

Marking Italian Heritage Month means recognizing the importance of safeguarding this diversity that makes us strong. As Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and People with Disabilities, I invite you to participate in the activities organized as part of Italian Heritage Month in order to learn more about the culture and contribution of people of Italian ancestry in the country.

Happy Italian Heritage Month to everyone!
