Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Kenya, William Ruto, about the situation in Haiti.

The leaders welcomed the news of a political agreement between Haitian stakeholders, which will allow the appointment of a provisional council and a transitional government. They stressed the importance of restoring democratic order in Haiti.

Prime Minister Trudeau thanked Kenya for its leadership in the United Nations-authorized Multinational Security Support Mission to restore stability in Haiti. The Prime Minister and the President discussed the latest developments and expressed deep concerns regarding the humanitarian and security crises plaguing Haiti. They reiterated their commitment to supporting the Haitian people and the Mission.

Prime Minister Trudeau indicated that Canada will contribute $80.5 million in support of the Mission. He also highlighted Canada’s continued efforts to support members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as they prepare to participate in the Mission. The leaders affirmed the need for other international partners to mobilize to provide the Mission with much-needed support.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President Ruto confirmed the close ties between Canada and Kenya and agreed to remain in close contact as the situation evolves.
