The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, met yesterday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed. Minister Joly and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed discussed several priorities and reaffirmed their commitment to working together on international issues, including global and regional security. The two ministers exchanged views on a range of international and regional security challenges, including the crisis in Gaza and Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Minister Joly thanked Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed for the UAE’s leadership in the humanitarian response to the conflict and for their role as a critical partner in finding a solution. Ministers discussed the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinian civilians, and agreed on the need to increase access to humanitarian assistance by all possible means. Minister Joly committed that Canada will join the international coalition working to increase the flow of aid to Gaza through a humanitarian maritime corridor from Cyprus.

Minister Joly reiterated her intention to advance bilateral relations between Canada and the United Arab Emirates, in particular through strong economic ties.

Minister Joly praised the momentum in bilateral relations between Canada and the United Arab Emirates, as we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year, and expressed Canada’s interest in continuing this collaboration.
