At the beginning of October 2023, the canton of Bern launched a call for applications for the installation of photovoltaic installations on cantonal road infrastructures (read the communication of October 3, 2023). The 90 best-suited objects previously selected were distributed geographically to constitute five lots.

In total, 19 companies expressed interest. Applications could be submitted until mid-January 2024. In the end, two applications were submitted by consortiums from Zurich and Basel. After evaluation, the Department of Public Works and Transport awarded two lots (Bernois Jura and Mittelland) to the Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich (EKZ) – Helion AG – mha gmbh consortium and one lot (Bernois Oberland) to the Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB) consortium. ) – TNC Consulting AG (TNC).

The first consortium intends to install large photovoltaic shade structures on the areas allocated to traffic and parking in the five cantonal rest areas (Grauholz North and South, Münsingen East and West, Perles). These shades not only produce solar energy, but they provide cooling shade in summer, thereby reducing the energy consumption of air conditioners in vehicles. The consortium plans to provide a total power of 8.5 megawatts with ten photovoltaic installations. In addition, it is studying the possibility of equipping three noise barriers, a retaining wall and a bridge in the Bernese Jura and in the Mittelland.

The second consortium plans to produce a total of 1.8 megawatts with 18 photovoltaic installations installed on retaining walls and three on bridges in the Bernese Oberland. Detailed studies are underway to determine the feasibility of the project.

Planning work for the first solar installations can begin in April 2024.

The Confederation and the cantons want to set an example in the implementation of the Energy Strategy 2050. The approach of the canton of Bern has enabled interested parties, in particular energy suppliers, companies, municipalities and energy cooperatives, to apply for the construction and operation of photovoltaic installations on noise barriers, retaining walls, rest areas and bridges that line the cantonal road network.
