The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, announced today that Canada is imposing a new series of sanctions. Six Russian officials are sanctioned under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations in connection with the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on February 16, 2024, and gross and systematic human rights violations. by Russia.

The individuals targeted by Canada’s latest sanctions are senior officials and high-ranking personnel of Russia’s criminal prosecution, judicial and correctional services who participated in the violation of Mr. Navalny, to his cruel punishment and, ultimately, to his death.

These latest measures come on top of several sanctions taken against Russian officials to put pressure on those involved in the unfair legal proceedings Mr. Navalny has faced since his return to Russia in January 2021, as well as in the silencing, through muscular and often violent methods, of Russian citizens who demonstrated against the treatment reserved for him.
