March 1, 2024 — Ottawa, Ontario — Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada and the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation

Today, Chief Rodger Redman of the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation and the Honorable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, announced that the parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance reconciliation and which determines how the parties will collaborate to find shared solutions to meet community priorities.

One of the main objectives of the upcoming discussions is to reach agreement on the negotiation of an agreement that reflects the reconciliation objectives of the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation, an agreement that is based on the recognition of distinct historical relationship between the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation and the Crown. As part of this process, Canada and the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation wish to reaffirm and recognize their history of alliance and friendship. According to the MOU, the parties will also seek ways to recognize the contributions of the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation to Canada and its rightful place within Canadian society, to improve the well-being of the community and to incorporate aspects of traditional knowledge from the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation into discussions.

The jointly developed Memorandum of Understanding will help the parties prepare to renew their nation-to-nation relationship focused on the recognition of rights, respect, cooperation and partnership. This collaborative work will build on the priorities identified by the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation to establish a solid foundation for realizing its vision of self-determination and achieving meaningful reconciliation with Canada.

The MOU is the result of ongoing discussions and is an example of how Canada is working in partnership with Indigenous peoples to develop shared solutions that renew relationships, respect inherent rights and promote reconciliation.
