(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver released the following statement after the House GOP’s standalone Israel security bill failed to pass the House of Representatives.

“For some time now, I have said to those who inquire that I would follow the lead of President Joe Biden on this critically important issue. With authoritarians in Russia, China, and Iran seeking to destabilize democratic governance around the world, I share the President’s view that we can and must stand with ALL of our allies to meet this critical moment in history—not play political games by pitting democracies against each other and isolating those seeking freedom from tyranny and terrorism.

“There is no question that America must provide assistance to Israel, which I strongly support and is what President Biden called for over four months ago. However, we have a moral obligation and geo-strategic imperative to also provide assistance to freedom fighters in Ukraine, humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian and Palestinian civilians, and security to our allies in Taiwan.

“For months, Speaker Johnson and Republicans in the House of Representatives have demanded a border security bill as the price to unlock a desperately needed package of security assistance for our democratic allies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Tragically, at the behest of Donald Trump and in the eleventh hour, the Speaker has chosen to kill the bipartisan border compromise that was achieved in the Senate and use Israel’s security assistance as a political cudgel to support Mr. Trump’s campaign.”

“Those who swear an oath to defend the constitution, should never use America’s national security as a cudgel to score cheap political points—which is exactly what the Speaker was doing by putting this bill on the floor, knowing it had no chance to pass the House of Representatives, let alone become law. Rather than wasting everyone’s time, the Speaker must stand up to the most extreme members of his caucus and put America’s national security first.”
