US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Ohio Sherrod Brown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined a bipartisan group of colleagues in urging the Biden Administration to increase tariffs on Chinese solar imports threatening American solar manufacturing jobs, including at companies like First Solar in Toledo. The Toledo Blade Editorial Board called the move “welcome action” and “important for Toledo.”
Read what they’re saying about Brown’s efforts to fight for U.S. solar manufacturing:
The Toledo Blade: Editorial: Protect U.S. solar
“The re-emergence of an effort in Congress to pressure the Biden Administration to hold Communist China accountable for subsidizing its solar panel industry is welcome action. A 2023 investigation of solar panel component manufacturing found that Chinese solar panels are being sold through manufacturers in Southeast Asia.”
“U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) is joining efforts with two Democratic senators from Georgia and Florida Republican Marco Rubio to renew the drive to punish China’s interference in the free market on solar energy. This is important for Toledo.”
“Solar panels are a critical component of the drive to wean energy consumption away from fossil fuels. America has a solar panel industry that should not have to compete with subsidized Chinese manufacturers. The jobs making those panels for America should be in America.”
The Toledo Blade: Sen. Brown renews fight to increase tariffs on China-made solar panels
“Mr. Brown told The Blade that the tariff dispute is ‘not a new fight’ and that China ‘continues to undercut American manufacturers.’”
“‘They’d like to put the solar manufacturing industry out of business here,’ [Brown] said, calling China’s tactic of selling panels with names of other countries on them a ‘Whack-A-Mole’ game.” Sherrod Brown seeks increased tariffs on Chinese solar panel components
“U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown wants President Joe Biden to boost tariffs on Chinese solar panel imports that he says threaten jobs at American companies such as the Toledo area’s First Solar, which employs more than 2,000 workers.”
“Brown joined with Republican Marco Rubio of Florida and Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock of Georgia on a letter urging Biden to use Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to increase tariffs on Chinese-made solar module, cell and wafer imports. Their letter says China heavily subsidizes its solar manufacturing industry so it can control the industry globally. It pointed out that last year, the price of solar panels made in China dropped to 15 cents per watt, more than 60% below the price of panels made in the United States. It says that by 2026, China will have enough capacity to meet yearly global solar panel product demands for the next decade.”
“Last year, the U.S. Senate voted to overturn the Biden administration’s suspension of tariffs on Chinese solar product parts that go through other countries, with nine Democrats, including Brown, joining with Republicans to pass the measure.”
The Hill: Senators ask Biden administration to increase tariffs on Chinese solar panel products
“Sens. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rubio specifically asked President Biden to hike the duties on the modules, cells and wafers used in panel production, arguing Chinese products are undercutting the American solar industry. The senators cited a 2023 study indicating Chinese-made panels are as low as 15 cents per watt, less than half that of a panel produced in the U.S.”
