“Any bill that claims to address immigration and fails to include all Dreamers is unacceptable. After months of negotiations that failed to include a single Congressional Hispanic Caucus member on this crucial Senate National Security Supplemental Deal, it is no surprise that this bill was doomed from the start because the constituencies most affected were not welcomed to the table,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia.
“I was born and raised in South Texas. I recognize the need for comprehensive immigration reform, something House Republicans refuse to introduce. This bill opts for draconian Trump-era policies rather than giving us the domestic immigration policies that are needed to lessen the burden on our border communities. This is not real reform. Real reform would include a pathway to citizenship for ALL Dreamers. With this bill, Dreamers have been betrayed by the Senate. Americans have been clear: Dreamers need to stay. They bring light to our communities, they bring warmth to our homes. Over 70% of Americans support creating a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.”
“As a Member of Congress, I took an oath to protect our most vulnerable communities, I’m committed to continuing the fight for a legal pathway for migrants to achieve the American dream.”
Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent the Texas 29th Congressional District. She is the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, the Vice Chair on Housing and Transportation of the House Democratic Caucus Poverty Task Force, and a member of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government
