Ekaterina Medvedeva received a grant from the company to study extracellular vesicles of parasites – causative agents of opistorchiasis, which will be conducted in one of the laboratories of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the guidance of leading researcher, Doctor of Biological Sciences Maria Pakharukova.
Helicon (one of the leading suppliers of laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables in Russia) held a competition of student projects in the field of molecular biology, biotechnology and related disciplines. A total of 263 projects were submitted for participation in the contest, from which 8 winners were selected. Among them was a master’s student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Ekaterina Medvedeva of Novosibirsk State University, who became the only representative of the eastern part of the country in the list of winners.
According to the terms of the contest, each winner will receive from the company the consumables necessary to carry out their research project in the amount of six hundred thousand rubles.
The object of Ekaterina Medvedeva’s research will be the trematodes Opisthorchis felineus, which parasitize in the bile ducts of mammals, including humans, and are the causative agents of opisthorchiasis. More precisely – small RNAs of parasite vesicles and their role in suppression of acute inflammation and host immune system responses caused by infection.
– After having studied the composition of the pool of small non-coding RNAs of extracellular vesicles of Opisthorchis felineus and evaluated their regulatory properties in relation to human cells, I would like to contribute to fundamental studies of molecular mechanisms of pathological and immunomodulatory processes of parasite-host relationships, as well as to evaluate the possibility of using the obtained material for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, – the winner explained her interest in this topic.
This project was part of the research on the parasite and the consequences of infection with it, which has been conducted for many years by the staff of the Laboratory of Molecular Mechanisms of Pathological Processes of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
