The action plan presented last year to promote vocational training has its effects in post-compulsory education and is intensified in compulsory school. Thanks to these measures, the figures show a certain stability in the choice of students at the end of schooling. The approach to the professional world is developing with the appointment of the first three regional coordinators whose mission is to forge links between educational establishments and the local economy. The Department of Education and Vocational Training continues in this direction and is delighted with the good reception from the world of work for the actions undertaken jointly.

The promotion of professional training is a priority of the Council of State included in its legislative program and a long-term task. On the first day of Career Fair, the Department of Education and Vocational Training took stock of its action plan in 16 measures unveiled last year. The State Councilor in charge, Frédéric Borloz, also insisted on the measures taken from compulsory schooling.

Coordination by region to bring the school closer to the local economic fabric

The aim of teaching the professional world approach is to help general students to plan and build a professional future project. From now on, it also concerns the pre-gymnasial route in eight pilot classes. Each educational establishment today has representatives for the approach to the professional world. To expand this system, three regional coordinators of the approach to the professional world were appointed at the start of the school year. They have enabled the organization of “Job Forum” days – local companies coming to an establishment to present their professions – and the creation of local networks to promote internships and links between establishments and the local economy. Ultimately, there will be eight in the canton, one for each school region. Frédéric Borloz praised the good reception received in schools and companies for all the initiatives aimed at bringing training closer to the professional world. Another example, the recent realization of a study on the shortage of MINT professions (mathematics, information, natural sciences and technology) which made it possible to compare training offers and needs in these sectors.

The measures make it possible to stabilize the figures, not to reverse the trend

Current figures show a certain stability regarding the choice of apprenticeship by students at the end of schooling. This stability is the result of decisions already undertaken over several years. But efforts must continue to improve the efficiency of the training system and ensure, in the medium and long term, a fair balance between professional and secondary education. The Canton needs both without opposing them, it is a question of finding the right balance. In this sense, the increase in the number of apprenticeship contracts signed at the start of the 2023 school year is good news. There are 150 more than in 2022 for a total of 6,031.

Support for students who struggle to find internships or apprenticeships due to lack of network, reduction of the failure rate in certain exams and support for the employability of adults (validation of acquired knowledge and assistance with certification ) are other measures which have shown their effectiveness and which will continue to expand.

The next major step in the promotion of professional training involves the ongoing discussions on the passage of secondary school maturity in four years. On this occasion and in collaboration with all training partners, the department intends to think more broadly about the end of schooling and the transitions between compulsory and post-compulsory school. A timetable and the organization of this project will be presented, as announced, in the first quarter of 2024.
