In the margins of the EU-CELAC summit, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she was ‘confident’ that a new EU-Mercosur free trade agreement would be finalised ‘by the end of the year’.
According to several news sources, the proposed additional text contains safeguards for the preservation of tropical forests, but does not include any measures to protect European producers against unfair competition from imported products that do not meet EU standards.
Can the Commission provide a broad outline of the text it is currently negotiating and which it hopes to see finalised by the end of the year?
